Vasevine Clematis: A.k.a. leatherflower. This delicate native vine has lovely, unique, bright pink bell-shaped flowers. As an herbaceous perennial (meaning that it regrows from the ground every year), it does not become overwhelmingly heavy or large. One vine can exist happily on a head high trellis, or be allowed to ramble on a wire fence without seasonal pruning to prevent fence damage. At home on woods edges, so needs at least part sun/shade. Soil should contain some loam and be protected by leaf litter and/or mulch for water retention. Native throughout most of the state, but uncommon in the wild or in cultivation.
