A.k.a. fire cherry, bird cherry, pidgeon cherry, wild red cherry. This fast growing colonizer species has white, fragrant spring flowers and fruit beloved by dozens of species of birds! Like other Prunus, it supports a variety of insects and other wildlife. Native to the far north of Indiana, it is well known for quickly filling open space after wildfires and can tolerate dry, poor soils.
Can self pollinate, but cross pollination sets more fruit. Narrow growth habit, grows as a large shrub or a smallish tree. Roots are shallow, but plants are very drought tolerant once established. As a fast growing, comparatively short lived species that casts bright shade, it is perfect to plant among slower-growing species to provide a sun and wind break for seedlings/saplings. Berries are edible and can be made into jam. Branches and foliage are known to poisonous, but are less so than many other cherry species. Hardy throughout most of Indiana, but prefers cooler summers.

Pollination: 2+ individuals recommended.

Notes: Individual plants live 20-40 years and are easily crowded out by taller species. Branches are prone to ice damage.
