Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna remota)
Spring Plant
This Species is typically available during our Spring Public Sale May-June at Geist Nursery in Fishers, IN.
This unique native hollyhock is known to be native to only one island in the Kankakee River! It has since been established in other locations in northern Indiana and Illinois and, although it’s remote original population is under constant threat from invasive species, it has proven easy to cultivate throughout its native region.
Best suited to moist, well drained soils. Height is made up mostly of bloom stalk, flowers are slightly fragrant. Young plants are readily eaten by deer and rabbits, so should be protected. Two genetically distinct individuals are needed to produce seeds, and seeds will not germinate without scarification or exposure to fire.
