A.k.a sweet shrub, Carolina sweetshrub, Carolina spicebush, hairy allspice, and strawberry bush. A suckering shrub with distinctive large, fragrant flowers! Flowers are said to smell like strawberry or pineapple, and leaves are fragrant when crushed. Can be pruned to shape, but suckers make it something of a sisyphean task. Easily grown, prefers part sun/shade and some loam in the soil. An excellent species to plant along a tree line and allow to sucker. The strong tasting and smelling foliage make it resistant to deer browsing.
