Note that this species is not native to Indiana or surrounding states. It is a southeastern species and only approaches southern Indiana’s latitude along the east coast. May not be winter hardy in central Indiana, but we’ve gotten A LOT of requests so. Ymmv.

A reasonably sized shrub with showy purple fall berries! Berries commonly remain on the plant to early/mid winter and are popular winter food for birds. Often planted for winter interest. Excellent for a woods-edge garden. To further control size or refresh an old plant, it can be pruned back midwinter to 1’ from the ground (this is known as renewal pruning). Fairly drought tolerant, but plants drop leaves and abort berries if they’re too hot and/or dry. May die back to the ground in harsh winters.
