This listing is for one packet of Common Wood Sedge (Carex blanda) seeds. Each packet contains roughly 100 seeds. For best germination of native species, remember to scatter seeds October-January!

A compact, semi-evergreen sedge excellent as a groundcover in part sun to bright shade, or as an “understory” in taller prairie plantings! Generally adaptable, it can tolerate Dry Mesic soil if in sufficient shade, and the lower end of full sun conditions (~6-8 hours) with sufficient water. Forms a small clump about 1.5’ wide and is deer (but probably not rabbit) resistant. Spreads well by seed and short rhizomes in open conditions- thus called “good groundcover” by some and “weedy” by others. Generally behaves when grown among other plants, but may grow dense enough to discourage other plants and weeds in a mass planting.

Light: Sun/Shade, Shade

Soil Moisture: Wet Mesic, Mesic

Soil Type: Adaptable

Height: 1’

Bloom Color: -

Bloom Time: May-Jun

Root Type: Fibrous

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts the eyed brown butterfly, multiple species of leafhopper, and one stinkbug. Seeds are eaten by squirrels and seed-eating birds including turkey, grouse, multiple species of sparrow, and cardinals.

Notes: This sedge’s claim to fame is its top placement in Mt. Cuba’s “Carex for the Mid Atlantic” trials, wherein they tested many native carex for suitability as a part shade lawn replacement. According to these trials, it has the potential to tolerate occasional mowing. Mt. Cuba’s writeup can be found on the website HERE.
