Often planted decoratively for its distinctive leaves, seed pods, and stunning fall color, sweetgum are a colorful addition to naturalized landscapes. Note that the round, prickly seed pods may require cleanup when trees are planted in lawns.

Pollination: 2+ individuals needed.

Fruit: Spiky round capsules contain dozens of seeds.

Root Type: Taproot

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts the large paectes moth and luna moth, and at least one bark beetle. Seeds are eaten by a number of songbirds including chickadee, mourning doves, junco, and goldfinch. Seeds occasionally eaten by squirrels.

Notes: My not develop a taproot when grown in moist soils. Some trees develop corky ridges on the bark that are particularly visible on branches.
