A.k.a. smooth elder, tag alder, hazel alder, or brookside alder. An excellent species for erosion control adjacent to bodies of water! Best planted in consistently moist, acidic soil in part sun/shade, but tolerates full sun and mucky soil. Dry soil and deep shade are not tolerated. Suckers to form colonies.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts many moths, beetles, leafhoppers, and a few smaller insects. Seeds are eaten by gamebirds, waterfowl, and seed eating songbirds suck as crossbills and pine siskin. Waterside colonies provide excellent habitat for birds such as grosbeak, blackbirds, and warblers. Commonly browsed by deer.

Notes: Each plant has both male and female flowers, which are wind pollinated. Unable to find any info for or against self pollination. Root system fixes nitrogen.
