One of the earliest blooming prairie plants! Distinct foliage, flowers, and seed pods are standout in plantings. Slow growing in the first year or two while roots establish, but established plants are heat and drought tolerant. Needs well drained and/or dry soils.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract mainly bumblebees and occasionally hummingbirds. Host the wild indigo duskywing butterfly, hoary edge butterfly, frosted elfin butterfly, orange sulphur butterfly, marine blue butterfly, three-lined grapholita moth, black spotted prominent, and many smaller insects. Generally avoided by mammalian browsers.
