The lovely and adaptable native bittersweet vine! Not to be confused with the similar looking invasive Asian bittersweet, our vines are pure American bittersweet, sourced from DNA tested stock. Only female vines produce the showy berries, and a nearby male plant is required for pollination.

Fruit: Female planters produce orange seed pods that split in fall to reveal bright red berries.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract bees, ants, wasps, and beetles. Hosts the common tan weave moth. Berries are eaten by game birds such a bobwhite and wild turkey, and are occasionally eaten by fox squirrels and some songbirds, such as bluebirds and thrushes. Foliage is commonly browsed by herbivores.

Notes: A twining vine that takes to trellises and fences well, but will need to be trained up smoother surfaces, such as dead trees or large support beams on a deck/gazebo.
