Interested in mosquito control that doesn’t harm other insects and wildlife? Mosquito buckets may be for you! Think of them as a trap for mosquito larvae; eggs go in but mosquitos don’t come out! Simply:

-Acquire a bucket (a 5 or 10 gallon from the hardware store is good)
-Place bucket somewhere shady (in area you want to reduce mosquitoes)
-Add some water (no more than halfway full to keep it from running over in the rain)
-Add a sturdy stick long enough to stick out of bucket (so any other critters that fall in can climb out)
-Add a handful of dead leaves (makes the water more desirable for mosquitoes)
-Add 1/4 of a mosquito dunk (which will kill any larvae in the bucket within a few days)
-Remember to keep a couple inches of water in the bucket and add 1/4 of a dunk every two weeks!

This typically notably reduces mosquitoes in the bucket’s area (ymmv if mosquito breeding grounds are nearby, such as lowlands or the yard of a neighbor that doesn't mind their standing water). Folks with large yards may want to place a few buckets around their house.

Dunk Info: Mosquito dunks are a non-toxic water treatment that kills mosquito and black fly larvae by releasing a bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, or Bti) that prompts the larvae to stop eating. Larvae take 2-3 days to die after application.

Dunks should be reapplied every 30 days at least, more often if the body of water flows over.
How much dunk to use by water surface area:
1-5sqft = 1/4 dunk
5-25sqft = 1/2 dunk
25-100sqft = 3/4 dunk
100+sqft = 1 dunk per 100sqft
