One of Indiana’s few native evergreens, this graceful, slow growing tree tolerates full shade and can be easily maintained as a hedge. Prefers part shade and moist, acidic soil. Plants are vulnerable to drought, and branches may scorch if they receive too much sun, particularly if the plant lacks water.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts a few borers and smaller insects. Seeds are eaten by small mammals and birds such as chickadee, crossbill, and pine siskin. Evergreen foliage provides valuable roosting and cover for a many animals, and important nesting habitat for several warblers, including the blackburnian and magnolia warblers.

Notes: Locally, these trees are best known from Turkey Run State Park and surrounds. Individuals are long lived and may reach 500 years old.
