A.k.a. ash-leaved maple. An adaptable and fast growing wildlife tree! Tolerates a wide variety of soil, water, and light conditions, including up to a month of flood conditions. Young trees can take bright shade. Perfect to plant in flood plains, under dying older trees, or mixed in with longer lived, slower growing trees. Prone to quick growth, and broken/dead branches, which makes them valuable to cavity nesters and wood boring insects. Hosts a fair amount of insects, including cecropia and rosy maple moths!

Pollination: Male and female needed.

Light: Full Sun, Part Sun/Shade

Soil Moisture: Wet, Wet Mesic, Mesic, Dry Mesic

Soil Type: Adaptable

Height: 30’-60’

Width: 30’-60’

Bloom Color: -

Bloom Time: Mar-Apr

Fall Color: Yellow

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts the cecropia and rosy maple moths, as well as other moths and smaller insects. A variety of birds eat the seeds including evening grosbeaks and purple finches. Many woodland birds feed on insects that feed of the foliage. Commonly browsed by deer.

Notes: We had blue birds fledge babied from a woodpecker’s hollow in a box elder that broke and died. Good to have around, but probably don’t plant close to buildings.
