A magnolia with distinctive large flowers and large leaves arranged in clumps. A showy and unique addition to the right spot! Prefers loamy, mildly acidic soil and part sun/shade, but tolerates full sun if soil remains moist. Intolerant of flooding or drought, best grown in areas sheltered from the wind. Plants with few or one trunk tend to grow taller than those with more stems.

Pollination: 2+ individuals likely needed.

Light: Part Sun/Shade

Soil Moisture: Wet Mesic, Mesic

Soil Type: Loamy

Height: 15’-30’

Width: 15’-30’

Bloom Color: White

Bloom Time: May

Fruit: Pink seed pods darken as they mature in fall, and split to release fleshy red seeds.

Fall Color: Yellow

Root Type: Branching (?)

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Little data available. Flowers attract beetles. Squirrels are the primary distributors of the seeds.

Notes: Flowers are often fragrant. Whether the fragrance is pleasant or not seems to be up for debate. Branches contain ethyl acetate, which allows them to resist several species of nematode.
