A.k.a. brookside alder. A little known nitrogen fixer that prefers shady, slightly acidic soils along rivers and creeks. Soils that are decently drained (not constantly waterlogged and broken up with sand or gravel) with a high water table (such as in swales or near ponds) are also accepted. Excellent for reducing erosion along stream banks.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts beetles, lace bugs, many moths, and some smaller insects. Several birds feed on the seeds, including mourning doves and goldfinches. Alder thickets are valuable nesting habitat for some grosbeaks, sparrows, blackbirds, and warblers.
Notes: Alnus incana is widespread in the northern hemisphere, but our plants are from the North American population (spp. rugosa) which tends to be much smaller than Eurasian plants.
