This sturdy hickory is adaptable and drought hardy once established! Large, thin-hulled were once valued as livestock feed, hence the common name, but are also used by a variety of wildlife. In the wild, this species favors hillsides and ridges over bottomland, so frequently saturated soil should be avoided. Otherwise, it is very adaptable. Like other hickories, it supports a wide variety of wildlife!

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Like other hickories, it hosts a wide variety of insects including the hickory hairstreak butterfly, many moths, beetles, weevils, leafhoppers, and other small insects. These insects and the tree’s large stature supports many woodland birds. Nuts are eaten by squirrels, chipmunks, mice, and raccoons, as well as birds like crows, woodpeckers, jays, and nuthatches.
