A.k.a. shellbark hickory. One of the largest hickories with the largest hickory nut, kingnut hickories earn their name! Prefers rich bottomland soils as tolerates seasonal flooding, but adapts well to average conditions. Like all hickories, the abundance of insects it hosts and it’s edible nuts make it a valuable addition to the ecosystem.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Hosts many insects including the banded and hickory hairstreaks, walnut sphinx moths, beetles, plant bugs, and some smaller insects. Nuts are eaten by animals such as turkey, woodpeckers, gray fox, raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks. The large size and peeling bark of older trees provide valuable habitat to many animals.
Notes: We have chosen the common name 'kingnut' over 'shellbark' to avoid confusion with shagbark hickory. Trees take 40 years to produce nuts. Trees are slow growers; larger trees have peeling bark similar to shagbark hickory.
