A fast growing willow ideal for shoreline stabilization, erosion control, and insect support! Trees are spreading and tends to form colonies. Generally adaptable and tolerates seasonal flooding. Like oaks (genus Quercus) and wild cherries (genus Prunus), willows are a keystone species that provide habitat and host a wide variety of insects, including the viceroy and mourning cloak butterflies!

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract small bees and flies. Hosts butterflies such as the viceroy, mourning cloak, and Acadian hairstreak, moths such as the sweetheart and darling underwing, leafhoppers, beetles, and some smaller insects. Snapping turtle and wood turtle feed on fallen catkins. Branches provide valuable woody cover on shorelines and wetlands. Occasionally browsed by mammals.
Notes: Typically stays between 30’ and 60’, but may reach 90’. Can be prone to splitting, so best not planted near buildings. Roots are strong- do not plant near sewer lines.
