A hardy, native fruit tree. Persimmons are some of the most energy dense fruits in the world, second only to avocado! Easily grown and adaptable. Moist, sandy soils are preferred, but trees are drought tolerant once established.  Grown from seed, trees produce fruit in 10-15 years.  Each plant is either male or female, and one of each is required for fruit set. Our saplings are unsexed.

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers are visited by a variety of bees and a few flies. Hosts a number of beetles, moths including luna and regal moths, and some smaller insects. Fruits are eaten by a wide variety of mammals and birds, including foxes, bobwhite, waxwings, and pileated woodpeckers.

Notes: Persimmons have a reputation for being difficult to grow in the north- this is because plants purchased through mail order are often descended from southern populations whose fruits don’t ripen before northern frosts begin. Our trees are descended from local populations, and their fruits ripen and fall before the first hard frosts.
