A spring bloomer, though the relatively large single flowers are usually hidden under a canopy of miniature umbrella-like leaves. Like many woodland ephemerals, it dies back completely in the summer. Will spread from rhizome to form colonies, but may also reseed in optimal conditions.
Does not adapt to acidic soils (under pine trees), and may be outcompeted by dense growing understory plants.

Light: Part Sun/Shade, Shade

Soil Moisture: Wet Mesic, Mesic, Dry Mesic

Soil Type: Loam, Humus

Height: 1’- 1.5’

Bloom Color: White

Bloom Time: Apr

Root Type: Rhizome

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract long-tongued bees, bumblebees, and some flies. Bitter foliage is avoided by mammalian herbivores. Fruits are eaten by box turtles, and possibly opossums, raccoons, and skunks, which spread the seeds.
