Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract bumblebees, long-horned bees, butterflies, and skippers. Hosts the Virginia ctenucha moth, the agreeable tiger moth,  the iris borer moth, and a number of smaller insects. Mildly toxic foliage makes it unpalatable to mammals.

Notes: The northern blue flag iris (Iris versicolor) is similar and difficult to tell apart, but is also state native. As it’s common name suggests, it’s range hugs the Great Lakes and is slightly more northerly than southern blue flag’s range.
